One-week online FDP on “Emerging Trends in Applied Chemistry: A Step towards Sustainable Development (ETAC-SSD: 2022)

The programme started with the welcome note from the respected Dean of Faculty of Science, Prof. Lakhwinder Singh. He heartly welcomed all the respected dignitaries, speakers and participants and emphasised on different aspects of chemistry like applied chemistry, green chemistry and the applications of chemistry in our daily life.

Hon’ble Pro-chancellor, Prof. Rakesh Kumar Sharma enlightened the event with an introductory speech on the ‘sustainable development’.

The chief guest Prof. M.P.S. Ishar, awarded with Punjab Ratan, explains about new trends in green chemistry and sustainable development.

Further, it was followed by the address note from the Guest of Honor, Dr. Kameswara Rao, DRDO scientist; he talks about the nano particles involved in green chemistry and importance of chemistry in ‘Aatm Nirbhar Bharat’.

The first Speaker of the technical session, Dr. Navjeet Kaur delivered a talk on ‘green chemistry and synthetic chemistry’. She discussed 12 principles of green chemistry and biological applications of 1,4 benzodiazepine nucleus.

2nd Day, 31st of May 2022

The program was started with the address note by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. O.P Kalra, SGT university. He emphasized on the importance of this FDP, which is useful for the faculty member as they will be learning about How to teach students sustainable development and to make them aware with our environment.

Session-I was started with an informative lecture by Dr. Marta Michalska – Domanska, Scientist & Assistant Professor, Military University of Technology, Poland. She discussed about Introduction to nanostructured oxide layers. In this session participants learn about titanium alloys and applications of anodic titanium oxide.

In Session-II, an informative talk on “Green Chemistry” was delivered by Dr. Nutan Sharma, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, FOSC, SGT University. In this session, participants learned the various applications and significance of Fluorine Chemistry and its applications in Medicinal Chemistry.

3rd Day, 1st of June 2022

FDP started with the address note by the Hon’ble Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Vikas Dhawan, SGT university. He discussed about ‘How does applied chemistry helps sustainable development’ and the importance of material chemistry specifically the biodegradable materials.

Session-I started with an informative lecture on ‘sustainable development by using enzyme chemistry’ by Prof. Neera Raghav, Chairman, Department of Chemistry, Kurukshetra University. In this session participants learned about three main pillars of the sustainable development.

Session-II was about ‘Biotransformation’, the lecture was delivered by Dr. Sneh Lata, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, FOSC, SGT University. In this session, participants gained with the knowledge of chemistry behind biocatalytic methods for the synthesis of optically enriched alcohols. She emphasized on the use of biocatalyst in organic synthesis.

4th Day of FDP, 2nd of June

Session-I started with an informative lecture on ‘antibodies and their therapeutic applications’ from Dr. Poonam Rajak, Scientist & Team Lead – Bioanalytics, Lonza Biologics PLC, England, UK. He gave an insight into the identification of target therapy and preclinical studies. In this session, participants learn about antigen and antibody’s chemical interactions.

Session-II also started with an interesting talk on ‘drug design’ by Prof. Manish Kumar Gupta, from SGT College of Pharmacy. In this session, participants gained the knowledge about two approaches of drug design that is Ligand based drug design and structure-based drug design. QSAR/QSTR approaches, SBDD and MD simulation were also discussed.

Day 5, 3rd of June:

The program started with the address note from respected Dean (R&D) Prof. R. D. Kaushik, SGT University. Prof. Kaushik emphasized on sustainable development and encouraged chemists to work in a manner to enhance sustainable development.

Session-I, Prof. Shashank Deep, Department of Chemistry, IIT Delhi, delivered an informative lecture on ‘Emerging trends in applied chemistry’. In this session, participants learned about IUPAC top ten emerging technologies in chemistry such as block chain, semisynthetic life, super wettability, RNA synthesis, sonochemical coating, and sustainable ammonia, etc.

In 2nd session, Prof. Kamal Kapoor, from Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu, talk about basic science as the source of curiosity. In this session participants learned about applied vs. basic science applications. Anti-Alzheimer agents were also discussed.

Day 6, 4th of June:

Today’s Session is started with a very interesting lecture on “Heterocyclic Chemistry” by Dr. A. Bendi, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, SGT University. The participants gained the knowledge of heterocyclic compounds as well as nano catalysis. Density functional theory was also discussed.

In the second session, Prof. Rita Kakkar, Emeritus Professor from Chemistry Department, Delhi University. She delivered an interesting talk on ‘Riveting Story of Molecular Modelling’. Participants learn about Molecular modelling, Molecular Dynamic and DFT study including HOMO and LUMO, electron density and electrostatic potential maps.
